The Leonida

Privacy

Short version: accounts are optional, your password is stored only in scrambled form, and your checklists stay in your browser unless you log in.

Cookies

Two cookies make the site work, and neither needs your permission. One keeps you logged in for up to 60 days on that browser; it holds a random token rather than anything about you, and goes when you log out. The other is used only if you sign in with Discord: it lasts 10 minutes and protects that step.

We don't run analytics or advertising scripts, so there is nothing to accept.

The site also remembers some things in your browser's own storage: your light or dark setting, your spoiler setting, checklist ticks, poll votes, Leonidle results, your visit streak and achievements, and your cookie choice. None of it is sent to us, except checklist ticks when you are logged in (see below). You can clear all of it on Your Leonida.

Accounts and reactions

You only need an account to react to stories or keep your checklists in step across devices. When you sign up with your email address and a password, we store your email address, your password in scrambled form (a salted hash we can't turn back into the password; nobody here can see it), the username you pick, the GTA character you pick as your profile picture, when you joined, and the reactions you leave.

We use your email address only for your account: to confirm it's yours and to send you a link if you forget your password. Those emails go out through our hosting provider, Cloudflare. We don't add you to the newsletter or send you anything else unless you sign up for it, and we never sell or share your address. To stop the same person from guessing passwords over and over, we count recent tries per email address and per network, keeping only a one-way hash of your IP address, never the address itself.

If you sign in with Discord instead, we store the ID of your Discord account and the name it shares with us, not its profile photo. Discord also shares your email address while you sign in; we use it once, to check whether you are one of our moderators, and don't keep it.

You can delete your account from your account page at any time. That removes your account, your email address and password, your reactions and your saved checklist progress straight away.

Checklists

When you tick an item on a checklist, it is saved in your browser on your device. If you're logged in, the tick is also saved to your account, so your progress follows you to your other devices. Clearing your browser data removes the copy in your browser; deleting your account removes the copy we keep.

Polls, Leonidle and tips

When you vote in a poll, we count the vote and store a one-way hash made from your IP address and the poll, so each person votes once. When you send us a claim to check on Is it true?, we store what you wrote and the page you sent it from, with a one-way hash made from your IP address and the day, so each person can send only a few a day. We never store the address itself. Your votes and your Leonidle results are also remembered in your browser so the page can show them to you.

Videos

Trailers load from YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain, and only after you press play.

Newsletter and the unlock email

If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address, the page and topic you signed up from, your time zone as your browser reports it, and the date, in a database run by our hosting provider, Cloudflare. We use it only to send the newsletter, which may be delivered through an email service such as Resend. Every issue has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time.

If you ask for the email when GTA 6 unlocks, we keep your address and time zone on a separate list, send that one email at your region's unlock time, and note that it was sent. It has a one-click unsubscribe link, and we don't add you to the newsletter or use the list for anything else.

Email

If you email us, we use your address only to reply. Questions about privacy go to contact@theleonida.com.
