Does GTA 6 require ID, internet or PS Plus? What you need to play
No ID check has been announced for GTA 6, and it's single-player, so you don't need PS Plus, Game Pass or GTA+. The UK, Irish and Australian age checks explained, and when you need internet.
No. Rockstar hasn't announced any ID or age check for Grand Theft Auto VI, and you won't need PS Plus, Game Pass or GTA+ to play it, because it's a single-player game. You do need an internet connection to download it, even the boxed version. What's changed is the consoles around it: in the UK and Ireland, PlayStation and Xbox now ask adults to verify their age to keep chat features, and Australia requires age checks for online games rated R 18+.

Does GTA 6 require ID?
No ID requirement for GTA 6 has been announced by Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ in the US, PEGI 18 in Europe and R 18+ in Australia, but a rating isn't an ID check; our ratings story has the details. In the US, the ESRB says most major retailers check age when selling M-rated games, which happens at the checkout, not in the game.
Where your age can come up is your console account, depending on where you live.
GTA 6 age verification in the UK and Ireland
Sony now requires adult PlayStation accounts in the UK and Ireland to verify their age before using certain features. Players who haven't verified "can continue playing on PlayStation," Sony's FAQ says, but voice chat, messaging, parties and broadcasting to YouTube or Twitch stay locked until they do, and some in-game chat and user-created content features can be restricted too. You can verify with a mobile number, a facial scan or ID, through a company called Yoti.
Xbox runs a similar check for adults in the UK under the Online Safety Act. Microsoft said in July 2025 that players who don't verify keep playing, but that from early 2026 their social features would be limited to friends only. Verifying doesn't affect the ability to play and buy games, Microsoft says.
Neither check is specific to GTA 6. Both cover chat and social features, and GTA 6 is a single-player game with no announced online mode.
GTA 6 age verification in Australia
Australia's age-restricted material codes, registered by the eSafety Commissioner, took effect March 9, 2026. Under them, players must complete some form of age assurance to access online games classified R18+, while other games need no checks, eSafety says. GTA 6 is classified R 18+ in Australia. Whether the codes cover a single-player game like GTA 6, and how Rockstar or the console makers would run a check, hasn't been announced.
GTA 6 age verification in the US
None has been announced. Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft haven't said anything about ID checks for US players, and the PlayStation and Xbox checks above apply to accounts in the UK and Ireland, not the US. Age checks at the store are retailers' own policies under the ESRB system.
Does GTA 6 require internet?
To download it, yes. Every version is a download: the digital editions, and the physical Standard Edition, which is a code in a box with no disc. The Rockstar Store says an internet connection and a platform account are required to download the game. After that, the PlayStation Store lists "offline play enabled." Rockstar's fine print says some features may need an internet connection or a Rockstar Games account, without saying which. Does GTA 6 require PS Plus or Game Pass?
No. Rockstar calls GTA 6 "a single player experience," PlayStation's FAQ says it has no multiplayer modes, and the Xbox Store lists it as single-player. PS Plus and Xbox's paid tiers are what you need for online multiplayer, and GTA 6 hasn't announced any. It isn't included in either subscription; see Is GTA 6 on Game Pass or PS Plus?
Does GTA 6 require GTA+?
No. GTA+ is Rockstar's paid membership, and digital pre-orders of GTA 6 come with a free month of it. Every GTA+ benefit Rockstar lists relates to GTA Online on GTA V or the GTA+ Games Library; none mentions GTA 6 content. On PlayStation, the free month must be claimed by March 31, 2027, and it renews as a paid subscription unless you cancel. Our editions guide has the details.
Does GTA 6 require a PS5 Pro?
No. PlayStation's FAQ says GTA 6 comes out for PS5 and PS5 Pro, and it isn't playable on PS4. The PlayStation Store marks it "PS5 Pro Enhanced," but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what the Pro version improves, and no frame rate or resolution has been announced for any console.
