GTA 6 pre-load, file size and Code in Box: what to know before Nov. 19

If you pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI digitally, you can start downloading it on Nov. 12, 2026, one week before the Nov. 19 launch. The physical version, available the same day, is a download code in a box with no disc, so it needs a download too.

Rockstar has not announced how big that download is. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what to sort out before launch day.

When GTA 6 pre-load starts

Rockstar says players who pre-order digitally "will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12." Its announcement gives the date but no time of day. The PlayStation Store lists the feature as "7-Day Pre-load." Pre-loading gets the download done early; the game still unlocks on Nov. 19.

Pre-orders are open on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Rockstar Games Store, and at retailers, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; our platforms guide covers which consoles can run it. When GTA 6 unlocks

Rockstar has not announced a launch hour. Checked on Oct. 8, PlayStation Store listings and Microsoft Store listing data show the game unlocking at midnight as Nov. 19 begins, with one time zone per country: midnight Eastern for the whole US, midnight UK time on the UK store and midnight CET on the German store. In the US, that moment is 9 p.m. Pacific on Nov. 18.

GTA 6 file size

Rockstar has not announced how big GTA 6 is. When we checked on Oct. 8, no PlayStation Store listing or Microsoft Store listing data gave a download or install size, and no Rockstar or Take-Two announcement has either. Any figure you see online is an estimate, not an official number; our Is it true? page tracks that claim.

We will add the size here when Rockstar or a store lists it. Until then, the practical step is to clear space on your console before Nov. 12 so the pre-load can start without trouble.

GTA 6 physical copy: a code in a box, no disc

There is no GTA 6 disc. Rockstar says the physical version, "containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12." The Rockstar Store puts it plainly: "A disc will not be included in the box."

What the Rockstar Store's FAQ and Rockstar's site say about the box:

• You need an internet connection and a platform account to redeem the code and download the game.
• PlayStation codes are region-locked to North America, the UK, or the EU and rest of Europe. Make sure the box matches your account's region.
• It is Standard Edition only. Rockstar lists the Standard Edition as "Digital or Code in Box." The Ultimate Edition is digital only.
• Rockstar Store physical orders ship from Nov. 12.
• The pre-order bonus still applies. The Vintage Vice City Pack covers all pre-orders and purchases before Nov. 20. The free month of GTA+ is a digital offer: Take-Two says it comes with digital pre-orders.

Rockstar's announcements do not say whether a code redeemed before Nov. 19 starts downloading straight away, the way a digital pre-order does from Nov. 12. If that matters to you, check with Rockstar Support or your platform's store before you buy.

What to do before Nov. 19

1. Pre-order digitally if you want the Nov. 12 pre-load. Rockstar's pre-load date covers digital pre-orders.
2. Clear storage space. The file size is not announced, so leave plenty of room.
3. If you buy the box, check the region. PlayStation codes are region-locked, so the box must match your account.
4. Sign in to your PlayStation or Xbox account and stay online. The boxed code and the digital download both need a connection.
5. Buy before Nov. 20 for the Vintage Vice City Pack. It covers every edition and format.
6. Redeem your free GTA+ month if you got one. The deadline is March 31, 2027, on PlayStation, and 180 days from purchase on Xbox. The PlayStation Store notes that it renews automatically after the free month.
7. Check your store page for the unlock time close to launch, in case it changes.
