GTA 6 physical copies arrive Nov. 12: what's in the box, when you can play and how to upgrade to Ultimate
Boxed copies of GTA 6 go on sale Nov. 12, and some have already reached stores in Germany. Inside is a download code, not a disc. There's no boxed Ultimate Edition, but Rockstar says box owners can upgrade.

Grand Theft Auto VI's boxed copies go on sale on Nov. 12, a week before the game unlocks, and some have already reached stores. Rockstar Games said on Nov. 3 that the code-in-box versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S should be at retailers from Nov. 12, and its support site now says they can ship or be picked up from that day, GameRant reported on Nov. 6.
On Nov. 7, photos of a shrink-wrapped PS5 copy appeared on Reddit, posted by someone who said they work at a store in Germany, and the German chain MediaMarkt showed a boxed copy on Instagram, Kotaku, Polygon and TheGamer reported. Here's what's in the box, what you can do with it and what you can't.
What's in the box
- A download code, not a disc. The Rockstar Store is blunt about it: "A disc will not be included in the box." Kotaku says a label on the front of the box repeats the warning and says you need an internet connection to redeem the code.
- The Standard Edition. The box comes only as the Standard Edition, which Rockstar sells for $79.99 in the US. The $99.99 Ultimate Edition is digital only.
- Maybe a poster. MediaMarkt showed a poster of Lucia with its box. Rockstar hasn't said a poster or map comes in every box, and its own Leonida map is a free download and a 99-cent print. Our map story has the details.
The back of the box mentions online functionality and in-game purchases, TheGamer reported from the photos. Neither is new: every age rating for GTA 6 notes in-game purchases, and the PlayStation Store lists the game as one player, playable offline, with optional in-game purchases. Rockstar calls GTA 6 a single-player game and hasn't said what those purchases are. Our guide to whether GTA 6 has online covers what's known.
When you can download and play it
| Digital copy | Boxed copy | |
|---|---|---|
| On sale | Now, as a pre-order | From Nov. 12 |
| Download | Pre-load from Nov. 10 | Once you have the box and redeem the code, from Nov. 12 |
| Play | When it unlocks on Nov. 19 | When it unlocks on Nov. 19 |
| Editions | Standard or Ultimate | Standard, with the Ultimate upgrade sold separately |
| Vintage Vice City Pack | If bought before Nov. 20 | If bought before Nov. 20 |
| Free month of GTA+ | With digital pre-orders | No |
Digital pre-orders can pre-load from Nov. 10: at midnight local time on PS5, and at midnight GMT on Xbox, which is 7 p.m. Eastern on Monday, Nov. 9. Box buyers start the same download once they redeem their code, from Nov. 12. Rockstar says the download needs up to 212 GB, so clear the space before your box arrives.
A box won't let anyone play early. With no disc, the game unlocks through the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store at the same moment as everyone else's copy in your region: midnight Eastern on Nov. 19 across the US, and earlier in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the UK.
Upgrading a boxed copy to the Ultimate Edition
There is no boxed Ultimate Edition. Rockstar's support site says so, GameRant reported, and adds that box owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store once their Standard Edition code has been redeemed.
The upgrade costs $20 on the US Xbox Store, the gap between the two editions. The PlayStation Store lists the upgrade as a pre-order add-on but showed no price for it when we checked on Nov. 8. The upgrade adds what Rockstar calls items threaded through Jason and Lucia's story, such as a '95 Grotti Cheetah, the Hawk and Little Morgan revolvers, personalized weapon variants and the Rideout Customs mod shop, according to the Rockstar Store's comparison of the editions. Our price and editions guide lists everything in both.
The Vintage Vice City Pack, the pre-order bonus, comes with boxed copies too, for anything bought before Nov. 20. The free month of GTA+ is a digital pre-order offer.
Buying a box
Retailers that took pre-orders can hand them over or ship them from Nov. 12. The Rockstar Store also sells the boxed Standard Edition while supplies last. It says shipping starts Nov. 12 and, after launch, orders ship in an estimated one to seven days depending on the shipping you choose. It also notes that PlayStation codes are locked to regions, so buy a box for the same region as your PlayStation account.
Rockstar hasn't announced a disc version of GTA 6. Our Is it true? page on discs has the detail, and if you'd rather not keep a box at all, our guide to cancelling a pre-order covers each store.
