Does GTA 6 have early access? No edition does, but New Zealand plays first
No edition of GTA 6 unlocks early: not the Ultimate Edition, not a boxed copy, not a pre-load. New Zealand plays first, at 6 a.m. ET on Nov. 18. What's true about the New Zealand trick and the censorship rumor.
No. Nobody gets to play Grand Theft Auto VI before it unlocks on Nov. 19, and no edition changes that. Rockstar Games hasn't announced early access, a beta or a head start for any edition: the $99.99 Ultimate Edition adds items in the game, not time, and Rockstar's site lists both editions for Nov. 19, 2026. On the US PlayStation Store, both editions carry the same release time, midnight Eastern.
What the calendar does allow is a head start on the download, and a time-zone head start for some countries. The first people to play will be in New Zealand, 18 hours before the US East Coast.
What you can do before Nov. 19
- Pre-load from Nov. 10. Digital pre-orders can download the game ahead of time: at midnight local time on PS5, and at midnight GMT on Xbox, which is 7 p.m. Eastern on Monday, Nov. 9. Pre-loading doesn't let you play; it means you can start the moment GTA 6 unlocks.
- Pick up a box from Nov. 12. The boxed copies hold a download code, not a disc, so they unlock at the same moment as digital copies.
- Read the reviews, eventually. Rockstar hasn't said when reviews come out, and the Nov. 18 date going around comes from a leaker.
Who plays GTA 6 first
The store listings unlock GTA 6 at midnight on Nov. 19 local time, country by country, except in the US and Canada, which follow midnight Eastern everywhere. Rockstar hasn't announced a launch hour; these times come from the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store, and our New Zealand story has the full list.

The New Zealand trick
Because New Zealand unlocks first, some players plan to switch to a New Zealand store to play 18 hours before the US. LADbible described the idea on Nov. 7: on Xbox, change the console's region to New Zealand; on PS5, set up a second PlayStation account in New Zealand and buy the game from the New Zealand store.
Before you try it, know what it involves. On PS5 it means buying another copy, in New Zealand dollars, on an account that isn't your main one. Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft haven't said whether it works for GTA 6, and we haven't tried it.
Is the New Zealand version censored?
There's no sign of it. LADbible traced the rumor to Reddit posts claiming the New Zealand and Australian versions unlock early because they're cut. The order has nothing to do with content: New Zealand is just the first of the stores' countries to reach midnight on Nov. 19. Australia's Classification Board rates GTA 6 R 18+, in line with the 18-and-over ratings it has in most countries, and Rockstar hasn't announced a modified version for any country.
Watch out for "early access" offers
Since there's no early access, anyone selling it is running a scam. In May, NordVPN's researchers found sites promising beta keys for PS5 and Xbox, one of which asked visitors to pay for subscriptions or download software, Decrypt reported. Rockstar has never announced a GTA 6 beta. Our story on fake GTA 6 apps covers the downloads to avoid.
Questions readers ask
- Does the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition have early access?
- No. The $99.99 Ultimate Edition adds items in the game, not an earlier start. Rockstar lists both editions for Nov. 19, and the PlayStation Store gives the same release time for each.
- When is the earliest you can play GTA 6?
- GTA 6 unlocks at midnight on Nov. 19 in each country's time, according to the store listings, so New Zealand goes first, at 6 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The US and Canada get it at midnight Eastern, which is 9 p.m. Pacific on Nov. 18.
- Does pre-loading GTA 6 let you play early?
- No. Pre-loading, which starts Nov. 10, downloads the game ahead of time so you can start the moment it unlocks. A boxed copy works the same way once you redeem its code from Nov. 12.
- Is the New Zealand version of GTA 6 censored?
- Nothing suggests it. The unlock order follows midnight around the world, not the game's content. Australia's Classification Board rates GTA 6 R 18+, and Rockstar hasn't announced a different version for any country.
