Videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leaked online in August 2026. Rockstar Games acknowledged the leak on Aug. 26, called it "heartbreaking for our team," and said it hoped players would wait to experience the game for themselves on Nov. 19.

This page does not describe, link to or debunk any leaked material, clip by clip. Instead it lists what Rockstar, its parent company Take-Two Interactive and the official stores have actually confirmed, so you can tell the difference.

What happened in August

Gameplay clips began circulating on Aug. 18, Kotaku reported, and AI-made fakes spread alongside them, which made real and fake hard to tell apart. Take-Two then sought DMCA subpoenas to identify the person responsible, including a request to a federal court in New York, according to TorrentFreak.

On Aug. 26, the day before it released An Extended Look, Rockstar posted a statement on Instagram. It said having videos of the game leak this way "has been heartbreaking for our team." It said the experience it intended "may now be impacted by some spoilers," and it hoped everyone "will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves" on Nov. 19, according to the statement and Engadget's transcription of it.

Rockstar has confirmed that gameplay leaked. It has not confirmed that any particular clip is real. That is why everything below comes from official sources only.

Earlier GTA 6 leaks

August 2026 was not the first time. On Sept. 19, 2022, more than a year before Rockstar revealed the game's title, it posted "A Message from Rockstar Games" on X. It said an unauthorized third party had illegally accessed its systems and downloaded confidential information, "including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto." Rockstar said it was "extremely disappointed" and that work on the game would continue as planned.

Trailer 1 leaked too. On Dec. 4, 2023, Rockstar put it up on YouTube and posted on X: "Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube." You can watch it, and every official video since, on our trailers page.

  • Nov. 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar set the date on Nov. 6, 2025, and Take-Two reaffirmed it on Aug. 7 and Sept. 17, 2026.
  • Pre-load from Nov. 12 for digital pre-orders, Rockstar says. The physical version, a download code in a box with no disc, is available from the same day.
  • No launch hour from Rockstar. Store listings unlock the game at midnight on Nov. 19 in each market's own reference time zone, such as midnight Eastern in the US, which is 9 p.m. Pacific on Nov. 18. See GTA 6 release time.

More in our release date guide and the release section of the ledger.

More in our price and editions guide.

Story and characters

  • Two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar's synopsis has them drawn into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida "when an easy score goes wrong."
  • Eight official character profiles on Rockstar's site: Jason, Lucia, Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder.
  • No voice cast has been officially credited, and no returning characters have been announced.

More in our characters guide.

  • Six official regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
  • Map size: Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Game Informer the map is roughly twice the size of GTA V's, according to IGN's report. Rockstar has published no official figure.

Gameplay

What Rockstar developers have described on the record, mostly to IGN and Game Informer:

  • You can switch between Jason and Lucia at almost any time, IGN's preview says.
  • Their relationship is optional, Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told IGN, and they stay partners in crime either way.
  • A Criminal Profile tracks what kind of criminal you are.
  • Police respond only to witnessed crimes or alarms, and you can rob stores alone or as a pair.
  • Some cars need tools such as a key cloner, and a phone scanner shows a car's value.
  • A Focus mode, which Nelson showed IGN and compared to Red Dead Redemption 2's Eagle Eye.

Our gameplay features guide has the full list, and our story on IGN's full Rob Nelson interview covers the newest details.

Music

  • Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, 34 original tracks made with Atlantic Records, comes out Nov. 19. Six singles came out Sept. 17.
  • In-game radio: Rockstar named six in-game radio stations on Oct. 8. There are no full tracklists yet, but Rockstar's preview of each station names three songs.

More in our soundtrack guide and radio stations guide.

Online and ratings

  • No online mode for GTA 6 has been announced. GTA Online on GTA V continues, Take-Two says. See Does GTA 6 have online?
  • Rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, with PEGI 18 on the UK PlayStation Store and R 18+ in Australia. See our ratings story.

Not confirmed

Rockstar has not confirmed a PC version, a frame rate, a file size, a voice cast, returning characters, an online mode or a "Trailer 3." If a claim about any of these comes from a leak, a social media account or a video, it is not official until Rockstar or Take-Two says so. The not-confirmed list on our ledger tracks each one.

How to check a claim yourself

Official GTA 6 news comes from a short list of places: Rockstar's site and Newswire at rockstargames.com, Rockstar's own social accounts, Take-Two's press releases and SEC filings, the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and Rockstar Store listings, the rating boards, and named Rockstar developers quoted by the press. If a detail appears only in leaked footage, in a screenshot of unknown origin or in a video that cites "sources," treat it as unconfirmed. Rockstar's own images are on our screenshots page.

Our confirmed-facts ledger lists every fact with its source and the date we confirmed it, and Is it true? rules on the claims going around.

Update log

  • Oct. 8, 2026: The launch-time line now says store listings unlock the game at midnight in each market's reference time zone (midnight Eastern in the US), not at everyone's local midnight. Added Rockstar's statements on the 2022 leak and the Trailer 1 leak, Focus mode, and the songs in Rockstar's radio previews.
