Grand Theft Auto VI is the subject of a feature in Dazed's autumn 2026 issue, and five Rockstar staff speak on the record in it. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, described GTA 6 to the magazine as "a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative," and he named the Miami music the team loves, without saying any of it is in the game.

The feature, by Thom Waite, is on Dazed's website with a Sept. 6 date, and the print issue went on sale internationally on Sept. 10. A retailer's listing for the issue says GTA 6 "features on the cover of Dazed." The game launches Nov. 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Who Dazed interviewed

Titles as Dazed gives them:

NameTitle
Rob NelsonHead of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North
Rupert HumphriesSenior vice president of narrative at Rockstar
Michael WiafeGame writer on GTA 6
Jamie-Lee LloydSenior art director for characters
Stu PetriVice president of 2D/UI design

Nelson and Humphries also spoke to LOVE magazine for its GTA 6 cover this fall; our LOVE story has those interviews.

"A Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative"

Humphries described GTA 6 to Dazed as "a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative." Rockstar's official synopsis sets up a criminal couple: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos end up in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida "when an easy score goes wrong."

Nelson told Dazed that the team loves the way "these characters aren't empty avatars" for players to do whatever they want with. "Their story becomes a journey you share with them," he said.

He described the balance the team is after: "We want to enable as much self-expression as possible," Nelson said, "without losing the essence of the characters."

Research: ex-criminals, police and club promoters

Humphries described how the team researches a place. "We will meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers," he said, along with "anyone notorious or influential who'll take our calls."

"We hang out, get a feeling for the place, listen to the stories," Humphries told Dazed. He said the team then checks what it hears against "books and journalism."

Wiafe said the team approaches the culture it portrays with "an open mind, a genuine appreciation and a deep curiosity." He warned against the cynical shortcut of putting something in the game just because it seems weird. The aim, he said, is to bring players a sense of discovery, "not just repeat cliches that already exist."

Lloyd said the research shaped how characters look. That firsthand context, he told Dazed, helped the team understand "the visual markers and nuances that define the identities we wanted to represent."

Miami music: what Humphries said, and what he did not

Humphries also talked about music. "We love Miami music, particularly Miami bass," he told Dazed, and he named "more recent Miami artists like Kodak Black and Sexyy Red."

The team was also interested in how Miami's hip-hop scene lives in house parties in Overtown, in clubs, and in high-end spots on South Beach where a bottle can cost thousands of dollars, he said. "We needed characters who could take us through those worlds."

Humphries did not say that songs by Kodak Black or Sexyy Red are in GTA 6. He named them as Miami artists the team likes. An Aug. 26 HotNewHipHop headline said both artists were confirmed for GTA 6; nothing in Humphries' quoted words says that. Rockstar named six in-game radio stations on Oct. 8, and its previews of them play 18 songs, none by Kodak Black or Sexyy Red. It has published no full tracklists yet. Our radio stations story lists every preview song, and our soundtrack guide covers Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album.

Rockstar's own character profiles already tie Vice City's music business to the cast. Boobie Ike and Dre'Quan Priest are partners in Only Raw Records, which has signed the rap duo Real Dimez.

A population of "detailed and varied" characters

Lloyd, the senior art director for characters, said the team developed "new tools and pipelines" to build "the most detailed and varied character population" it has ever made. Authenticity, he told Dazed, comes from "more than appearance alone": it is "the combination of how a character looks, moves, interacts and expresses themselves."

Nelson pointed to the setting. Florida and Miami, he said, have "perhaps one of the most diverse and interesting populations in the world."

Brands that fit the world

Petri, the vice president of 2D/UI design, described the in-game brands. "Our vision is to build a vibrant, believable culture," he said. The brands, he told Dazed, "reflect the aspirations, aesthetics and lifestyles of the people that inhabit our world's spaces."

Wiafe said he hopes for "a landscape that players feel they've been dropped into" and can roam endlessly.

Nelson on the pressure

Nelson told Dazed he doubts that any amount of outside pressure "could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves as a team."

He described the work as "very iterative": the team adjusts a lot by feel, keeping what works and changing what does not. He called the pressure a privilege the team knows it is "fortunate to have," and closed with: "All we want to do is deliver for our audience."

Update log

  • Oct. 8, 2026: Dazed refers to Jamie-Lee Lloyd as "he," and we had written "she"; that is fixed. The radio line now notes that Rockstar's station previews play 18 songs, none by Kodak Black or Sexyy Red.
