Can you go inside buildings in GTA 6? What Rockstar says about interiors
GTA 6 has far more interiors than Rockstar's earlier games, Rockstar North told Edge: homes, shops, gyms, clubs and safehouses. Here's what you can go into, from what Rockstar has said and shown.

Yes, and far more of them than in earlier Rockstar games. Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Edge that GTA 6 has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than its predecessors: homes, shops, gyms, clubs, garages and the places you rob. Rockstar hasn't said that every building can be entered. Here's what Rockstar and its developers have said and shown.
"An order of magnitude more interiors"
Garbut told Edge that every back alley is as carefully made as any other, and that even after years of playing the game, he still finds places he hasn't seen. Edge describes interiors built up in layers by architects, artists and designers: photographs on the walls, belongings piled on tables, kitchens and living rooms as messy as the people who live in them.
Garbut gave an example from that morning's play session. He walked into a house he'd never visited, found photos of the family dog in one room, and in the next found what the dog had done while left alone. Jason grimaced and recoiled without any scene written for it: a reaction to bad smells, first made for one location, has become a system that other places can set off too.
Places you can go into
- Your own place. Edge's demo opened in the small apartment Jason and Lucia share. Rob Nelson told IGN that safehouses are more interactive than in earlier GTA games, closer to the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Garages. Rockstar's descriptions name the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, part of the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus, with a weapon locker and space for stolen goods, and Paradise Garage in Watson Bay, which comes with the Ultimate Edition.
- Shops. Nelson told IGN that clothing stores and hair salons stock items found only in that location, and that new hairstyles come from a salon or barber. Rockstar's Ultimate Edition text adds a tattoo parlor, mod shops and a clothing store, Stock 305, all Ultimate Edition only.
- Gyms. Jason and Lucia can work out together once they've bought a membership, Edge reports, and Nelson told IGN the gym builds their muscle and strength.
- Stores and banks you rob. Nelson told IGN you can rob stores or banks as a pair, and Edge reports holdups of gas stations and jewelry stores. Rockstar's screenshots show one from the inside: Jason smashing a jewelry store display case while Lucia covers the customers.
- Clubs and bars. Garbut told Edge you can spend a day buying cigarettes and beer at a shop, riding the train or going to a club. Rockstar's screenshots show crowded club interiors.
The first job in An Extended Look, Rockstar's 26-minute video, also starts indoors: Jason and Lucia go inside to ask for Raymond. Our guide to who's who in An Extended Look has more.
What we don't know
- Whether every building opens. Garbut's "order of magnitude" is a comparison with earlier games, not a promise that every door works.
- Whether you can go into the tall towers of Vice City's skyline.
- Whether going inside means a loading screen. Rockstar hasn't said.
We'll fill this in from the game after Nov. 19. For the rest of what Rockstar has described, see our gameplay features guide.
